Here are good day-trips and overnight excursions using Venice Florida as your base:

Only a half-hour’s drive (20 miles/32 km) north from Venice (map), Sarasota offers lots of enjoyment in its fine art museums, circus museum, waterfront parks, restaurants and shops. In March, catch a spring-training pre-season Red Sox game.

SCAT local and regional buses can take you to Sarasota from the Venice Train Depot.

Long green leaves, Florida

Zoom up I-75 80 miles (129 km, 1 hour 30 minutes), and you can be in Tampa, with its busy international airport, shops, restaurants, and historic cigar-making district.

Orlando & Disney World

Orlando and Disney World, 146 miles (235 km, 2 hours 30 minutes) is more of an expedition, and could be done in a day, but is better done overnight or over two nights.

Birds on the beach, Florida

Follow I-75 south and east 212 miles (341 km, 3 hours 30 minutes) and you’re in Miami. Plan a stop along the way to visit the Everglades.

Key West!

Hemingway House, Key West

Granted, this is a long-shot. If you want to go from Venice to Key West, it’s a trip of 360 miles (580 km), so you’ll want several overnights. Combine it with a trip to Miami, or rent a car in Venice, return it in Miami, and fly off to your next destination from there.
